At FLEX, we live our values. We work with clients who are mission-driven, solutions-oriented, and committed to unequivocal excellence. And we’re proud to say we turn down work that doesn’t align with those values. But what happens when a partner that once felt like a great fit slowly drifts out of alignment?
That’s exactly what we faced this year.
We had worked with this particular client before and re-engaged after a brief pause, excited by the opportunity to build on past progress. Our work with them touched every facet of the FLEX model—from a full FLEX360 assessment and brand workshops to mission and messaging development, content creation, and strategic fundraising support. We spent time with their leadership team, helped design internal roadmaps, and made connections to new partners who could supplement our work.
But as the engagement progressed, something shifted.
Despite our best efforts, the client repeatedly declined to implement recommendations. Insights were ignored. Tools sat unused. Critical feedback was deflected or dismissed. Over time, it became clear: this wasn’t just a capacity issue or a communications hiccup. It was a fundamental misalignment. Their leadership lacked the will—or interest—to evolve.
And we were spending more time navigating internal friction than delivering real impact.
So we made the tough call to walk away. Not out of frustration or failure—but out of respect. Respect for our own values, our other clients, and the work we know we do best. Saying goodbye freed up time, energy, and creative capacity to serve partners who do want to grow—who are open, honest, ready, and aligned.
It wasn’t easy. But it was necessary.
Because integrity isn’t just something we preach. It’s something we practice—even when it means stepping away.
