Both matter, but they require different strategies. We often see organizations claim to be building a "community" when they are actually just growing an audience.
The Audience: You get their attention
An audience chooses to hear from you. They subscribe to your newsletter, follow your social accounts, or attend your events.
- The dynamic: One-to-many. You broadcast, they receive.
- The value: You educate, establish credibility, and move people toward a specific action.
- The strategy: Focus on relevance, consistent content, and clear calls to action. If you lose the stream of content, the engagement stops.
The Community: You get their participation
A community exists when members connect with each other around a shared purpose. The organization provides the structure, but members provide the value through relationships and shared ownership.
- The dynamic: Many-to-many.
- The value: Trust, deeper resilience, and peer-to-peer support. A community survives without your content calendar because the relationships have inherent value.
- The strategy: Focus on facilitation. How do members interact? What are they contributing?
The Dividing Line: Participation
If you stopped publishing for a month, would your audience go quiet, or would your community keep talking? An audience is attentive; a community is connected.
Don't Blur the Lines
When you apply a community strategy to an audience, you risk seeming demanding. When you apply an audience strategy to a community, you risk feeling impersonal.
- Audience success metrics: Reach, subscriptions, conversions.
- Community success metrics: Member-to-member interaction, retention, emerging leadership.
Create the Path
Your audience should be the entry point to your community. Use your content to bring people in, and use intentional invitations to help them move deeper—into conversations, gatherings, and shared leadership roles.
Don't force everyone into a community. Some people only want to read your work, and that is valuable, too. Build for both, but stop mistaking one for the other.
